Bader International Study Centre (BISC)
Herstmonceaux Castle
It's not very often that we feature a castle on our website but this magnificent building, Herstmonceaux Castle, is the location of the Bader International Study Centre (BISC) - the prestigious UK campus of Canada’s Queen’s University.
Our customer APMG manufactured and installed high-quality lab furniture, fume cupboards, fans and ductwork for the University and the international students studying within the picturesque 15th-century castle.
After meeting with representatives of the BISC, AED Architects and the main contractor, Pilbeam Construction, APMG set about manufacturing tough, high-quality, ergonomic and attractive components for the science facility - featuring a main laboratory, prep room, analytical room and maker space.
The BISC science facility was designed to last and to enhance productivity, but also to make team members and students feel valued. The project team was tasked with providing light, positive, productive and resilient spaces, fitted with first-class lab furniture and fume cupboards.
The project delivered a learning and teaching environment perfectly reflecting the value the Bader International Study Centre places on education:-
“Thank you! We are delighted with our new laboratory and incredibly pleased with the overall quality of the finished product.”
Why was Trespa TopLab specified?
All laboratory and functional environments need to comply with rigorous codes and standards. Selecting the right material was therefore, of crucial importance to Queen's University.
A combination of Trespa® TopLab®PLUS and Trespa® TopLab®BASE was specified throughout for laboratory worktops, cupboard doors, drawer fronts and end panels.
Trespa TopLab Base was specified due to its strength, robustness, high impact and wear resistance combined with minimal maintenance.
Trespa TopLab Plus was specified for its high chemical resistance, enabled by Trespa's unique EBC (Electron Beam Curing) technology. The resulting closed surface also delivered excellent smoothness and cleanability.
Trespa TopLab proved invaluable in delivering good-looking, robust and long-lasting furniture for the project. Where chemical resistance was critical, APMG used Trespa TopLab Plus. For applications where severe use and frequent cleaning were anticipated but the chemical resistance of the surface was not essential, such as hard-wearing benching, APMG used Trespa TopLab Base.
