University of Nottingham Biodiscovery Institute
Our customer FBS Contracts, working alongside GF Tomlinson Limited and the University of Nottingham, recently completed a second major fit-out at The University of Nottingham.
Fitted Furniture for laboratories
GF Tomlinson invited FBS Contracts Limited to participate in the design and coordination of the fitted furniture package. Design meetings were held with end-users from each department, the M & E sub-contractors, and Benoy Architects to provide a personalised experience for the customer.
The use of an Autodesk Revit 3D modelling package meant that the client could view a 3D image of how each laboratory would look, allowing for any changes to be made in a cost-effective way.
High-performance Materials Required
The early engagement of FBS Contracts as the furniture contractors allowed them to test and purchase specialised materials suitable for the environments they were fitting. It also enabled them to coordinate production around a tight installation schedule running concurrently across 2 floors.
£23m Research Facility
FBS Contracts ordered over 1000m2 of 16mm Trespa® TopLab®BASE from Performance Panels for the project at the new University of Nottingham Biodiscovery Institute.
The £23m research facility was built to house around 350 academics, researchers and PhD students across five floors of state-of-the-art laboratories and research space. This permits experts in serious diseases (including cancer, cardiovascular, liver, bone and respiratory conditions) currently located at six separate University of Nottingham sites, to work together.
The design for the centre was based around large fixed laboratory workstations for the academic students, with small areas of fixed benches and mobile tables for the research areas. All the Trespa® TopLab®BASE worktops were fully supported on steel leg frames to give a high load capacity, together with mobile units to give total flexibility.
Why Choose Trespa® TopLab®BASE?
Graham Heyes at FBS Contracts told us why they chose Trespa TopLab Base:
"Trespa® TopLab®BASE E0-02 Silver Grey was selected for its hard-wearing properties, ideal for areas with such high use. All worktop surfaces and wall shelves were fitted with Trespa TopLab Base, together with some specialist component parts throughout the building."
He continued " We use Trespa when high impact, scratch and wear & tear resistance are needed. The surfaces have a smooth surface making them easy to clean."
